Summery Fruit Salsa


I love fruit. When given the choice between fruits and vegetables, I will almost always choose fruit. It's sweet, cool, tart, fresh and every other delicious descriptive word in the English language. The other day I found myself craving salsa. But it was way too hot for the spicy, savory, tomatoey kind.

Enter fruit salsa. It's everything I want in a salsa, with the added bonus of cool refreshment and sweet nourishment.

The beauty of this salsa is that you can use whatever fruit you want and it'll turned out amazing. And because it's officially berry season in Calgary (YES!!), I had no choice but to include the most delicious strawberries and raspberries.

The strawberries added a little sweetness, while the raspberries and Granny Smith apples balanced out the salsa with a little tartness.

I don't think there is anything much better than fresh berries on a clear summer day. I could go to one of the many farmer's markets around the city, buy pounds of fresh berries and eat them all in an afternoon. Seriously, when people say fruit is nature's candy, they ain't kidding! I could eat that stuff forever! It's just too bad berry season doesn't last very long here. So I have to get my fix when I can!

So I made this salsa in 10 minutes flat and enjoyed it in 10 seconds flat! Seriously, guys, this was breakfast, lunch AND dinner. It's everything I want in a summery recipe.

Refreshingly cool.

Slightly sweet.

Perfectly tart.

I also picked up some whole wheat pitas, brushed them with some olive oil, sprinkled them with a little cinnamon sugar mixture and baked them until crispy.

Cinnamon Sugar Crisps

  • 4 whole wheat pitas, cut into wedges
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Fruit Salsa

  • 2 granny smith apples
  • 1 lb strawberries
  • ½ lb raspberries


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine cinnamon & sugar. Set aside.
  2. Brush both sides of of the pita and sprinkle each side lightly with cinnamon sugar.
  3. Cut tortillas into wedges. Place on a baking sheet and bake 8-11 minutes or until crisp.
  4. Finely chop apple and strawberries. Combine with raspberries.
  5. Arrange nicely on a platter.
  6. Dig in!
